Grandchildren

Grandchildren are the neatest little people! They allow you to remember and re-live that fleeting moment in your life when your children were little. At the time, when they were driving me crazy (or so I thought), I wanted them to grow up! I remember saying as much to my mother-in-law and she said "Don't say that! You'll miss them when they're gone!" And I didn't believe it! But she was RIGHT!

I especially miss the "talks" we had after they were all grown-up. I remember thinking that I had the most wonderful children. I actually enjoyed conversing and yes, discussing hot topics with them.....It was no longer why is the sky blue? But what do you think about this situation? I guess the relationship changed from mother/young son to mother/young adult son. But it was cool to be able to talk to an "adult" now....

I also miss our family unit. We played games and sports. We went to movies and to see the relatives (the latter, I hated as a kid but now I appreciate the time I spend with my father, mother and mother-in-law and my siblings too, knowing I won't have them forever....It really hurts to think of a future when "they" (any one of them) won't be there!) Our family went to the beach and on vacation--the memories go on and on......and my grandchildren are doing many of the same things with their parents as our children (THEIR parents) did with us.

In fact, not too long ago I made a list of many happy memories when the boys were little for my son Shane at his request. Everyone ought to do that--make a list of happy memories! The glass soon becomes more than half full!

But back to grandchildren. They are so honest and pure and unconditional in their love. Every stage is exciting. I can't describe the thrill of feeling chubby little arms hugging your neck. Or the smile it puts on this grandma's face just to talk to them or see a new photo or hear of their latest accomplishments! And the memories come flooding back......

Grandparents are not too shabby either!!!
It is so neat to watch Landon when he spends time with you and Grandpa! He just lights up whenever he sees you!

I'm thankful that I have Amanda. The age difference between her and the other two children make me realize how really fast they grow up. I think I'm able to enjoy even the tedious moments because I've been through this before and realize that soon they'll say things correctly, quit spilling things, won't fall down and need me to pick them up, etc...

It makes me sad to think about it.

Amy, I think you are a wonderful mother--much better than I was. It is a blessing to have an older child--someone you can REASON with (or not!). I know Travis was a big help to me when his brothers were born. Besides, it's kinda fun to have a teenager, a toddler and a newborn all at once! Maybe I'm crazy here but think of it--you get the best of all worlds! You get to experience the excitement of your daughter (or son) becoming a young adult with worlds to conquer, the absolute cuteness of a three year-old learning and exploring and saying the most amazing, funniest things AND the preciousness of a baby that smiles and coos and thinks you are her world!
